Happiness is a mood, not a destination

These were such good lines. I wanted to preserve them somewhere..

Happiness is a mood, not a destination.

Julian: People get lost when they think of happiness as a destination.

Brooke: How do you mean?

Julian: We're always thinking that someday we'll be happy, you know, we'll get that car, or that job, or that person in our lives that will "fix" everything. But happiness is a mood, and it's a condition, not a destination. It's like being tired, or hungry... it's not permanent. It comes and goes, and that's okay. And I feel like if people thought of it that way, they'd find happiness a lot more often.

Brooke: So you think it's okay to be a little miserable, every now and then ... even when you have great things in your life?

Julian: Is it okay to be a little hungry now and then?

Brooke: Happiness is a mood, not a destination. I like that.

I love Python!!

I am not talking about the snake. I am talking about the language.

Simple yet so powerful (a perfect combination!). That's my impression of it. And I am glad I got introduced to it.
A lot many thanks to www.udacity.com for that.

Also, it is wonderful to know I have many fellow Python-lovers. Like this guy whose blog I came across - life is short - you need Python!
Yes, I feel the same. Everyone should know Python. :)

The "Galey ka patta" (The Leash)

An ID card hung around the neck is a common sight in an IT company. Sure, working in a software company myself, I am always surrounded by people wearing them.
What baffles me is how people go about saying they are proud of their ID cards. Why? What is so great about your Name and Employee ID hung around your neck all the time as if you were a slave or a prisoner??
I call it the 'Galey ka patta' because it actually makes me feel that the company wants me to be its faithful dog.
I don't deny that I know the purpose of the cards- security. But, I'd rather prefer something to the likes of a badge that wouldn't irritate my neck by just hanging there 12 hours a day.
Security could just as well be maintained with doors that open only after a card swipe or a fingerprint impression. But, I am not asking for too much. To use fingerprint readers might add a lot to the expenses.
I am just asking to remove the 'patta' and to make it a badge or something that I can pin down to my shirt.
That would feel less like being enslaved or imprisoned in work.

another GRE issue topic

We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
                                                               OR
We can normally learn more from like-minded persons than from those who have contradictory viewpoints; conflict can prevent learning and lead to tension.

It is true that sometimes a discussion on a topic with a person having a viewpoint contradictory to ours can lead to conflict, hence, preventing learning by leading to tension. But, if we keep ourselves open to new suggestions and viewpoints, not exhibiting intransigence, we can actually learn as much (or maybe, more) from that person as from a like-minded person.
Like-minded people, while discussing in a friendly manner, can work together to gain further knowledge on the matter of concern. It is a great opportunity to gain further knowledge by working together towards the same goal with no conflicting ideas serving as hindrances on the way. It is also true that when two opposite-minded people discuss a point, they might start trying to impose their own views onto the other person, thus, resulting in conflict. And this might lead them to get stuck on the same place they were, not allowing them to move on towards gaining further knowledge, as they will be too busy trying to prove each other wrong.
But, if that discussion is taken in a healthy manner, people having two contradictory views can explain each of their points of view and together, amicably reach a conclusion by having a healthy debate. After all, it is always stimulating to discuss a point when the other person helps you to broaden your perspective by showing you the other side of the coin. A person who contradicts our ideas can make us turn around and go through them again. Therefore, such a person can actually help us to make sure that our ideas and the methods of performing the intended actions are reasonable and sound.
When a certain political party or business organization decides to take a step, the first step towards putting the idea into action is to discuss the idea with the both the like-minded members as well as those who would have some contradictory opinions and would question it. In this way, while a lot of useful suggestions are given, the credibility of the idea is also confirmed.
Thus, we can learn as much from people with contradictory viewpoints as we could from like-minded ones if we keep ourselves open to analyzing the other side of the coin.

Love letter

Oh.. am so in love! I keep thinking about that sweet, melodious voice and those sleek, stylish looks. Life is so dull without my love in my life... :)
No getting ideas there.. I was talking about my k550i sony ericsson cellphone, and am still single.. ;)
I was just sitting around one day, having no work to do, and wrote this down :

Dear cellphone,
Whenever I see lights flashing on your screen, my heart starts beating at the pace of the pitter-patter of torrential rain. Your ringtone makes my heart sing. You spread light into the dark corners of my life with your bright torchlight. Whenever you sing to me, I feel like dancing.
You never let me feel alone in this world. When i'm bored, tired, scared or feeling down, you sing to me and give me hope and strength. And I know that I can never get lost, because you'll always be there to get help for me by just a click of a button (to call a person who cares for me).
So, well, I just wanted to beep this message to you and so, I wrote it.
Take good care.
Yours lovingly,
Techgal
(I know, it wasn't as good as i wanted it to be, but, the idea was nice.. )

exams!!

Our first internals just started today.. in addition to not having any inclination what-so-ever to study, am also aware of the fact that this is my final semester in college. the last few months of college which i have decided to make the most of by enjoying each moment of college life that comes.. Am so eagerly waiting for the college 'days' celebrations to start, but have these internals to get over with first.
well, at one point of time i got so fed up trying to study yesterday that i closed my books and typed down a message to express what i was going through. I sent it to all my friends, who hopefully would have understood that it was a message not a forward.. here it goes:
" Syllabus hai itna saara..
Par kya karein padha nahin jaata..
Book kya kholoon neend aa jati..
rota hai dil ye bechaara..
Teachers toh laga denge..
Answers ke aage zero bada..
Koi unse kaho to taras khayen..
Aakhir final sem hai yeh humara!!"

To spend some time alone

I came across the pool of issue topics given for GRE prep on their official site and thought they would be cool topics to write on. So, I'll write some posts based on those topics. These are strictly my views and discussions to help me broaden my viewpoint are welcome.. Also, any advice to help me improve on my writing skills would be great.

"Spending time alone makes one a better companion to others."

‘Man is a social animal’. But, sometimes one needs to spend some time alone too.

What makes a person good to be with is his/her inherent charm, or as one could call it, charisma. Looking at any famous personality, you would realize that the main factors that result in charisma are self-confidence and inner contentment.

Spending time alone helps one to reflect and to know oneself better. This is very important for one’s self-growth. Only if you are comfortable with yourself, can you be self-confident. People who cannot spend even a little time alone, getting bored with themselves, do not have much confidence in themselves, and certainly do not love themselves enough.

It is crucial to love yourself enough so that others do not take you for granted. It is well-known that the way others treat you is often the way you consider yourself fit to be treated. An obsequious person will always be treated as a ‘door mat’ because he himself does not have a high opinion of himself and behaves in a way that tells others that it is acceptable to him when you treat him that way.

People feel comfortable only with those who are comfortable with themselves. No one wants a nagging and whining companion to spoil their day. People with a healthy opinion of themselves are only attracted to similar people. They do not feel comfortable with someone who regards himself as insignificant and does not have a good opinion of himself. When you spend time alone and begin to enjoy your own company, you develop the self-love that is required to be a better companion to others.

Therefore, it is necessary to spend some time alone as it helps us to become self- confident , promotes our personal growth, and makes us become a better companion.
