The "Galey ka patta" (The Leash)

An ID card hung around the neck is a common sight in an IT company. Sure, working in a software company myself, I am always surrounded by people wearing them.
What baffles me is how people go about saying they are proud of their ID cards. Why? What is so great about your Name and Employee ID hung around your neck all the time as if you were a slave or a prisoner??
I call it the 'Galey ka patta' because it actually makes me feel that the company wants me to be its faithful dog.
I don't deny that I know the purpose of the cards- security. But, I'd rather prefer something to the likes of a badge that wouldn't irritate my neck by just hanging there 12 hours a day.
Security could just as well be maintained with doors that open only after a card swipe or a fingerprint impression. But, I am not asking for too much. To use fingerprint readers might add a lot to the expenses.
I am just asking to remove the 'patta' and to make it a badge or something that I can pin down to my shirt.
That would feel less like being enslaved or imprisoned in work.
